Quantifying
Supplementary materials for the book:
All labs require you to have QuickTime [TM] or another application able to read videos, and a functional version of JWatcher installed on your computer. Quicktime can be freely obtained from Apple Computer. JWatcher can be freely obtained at the University of California Los Angeles download site.
Observing and quantifying behavior (15.1)
This lab uses JWatcher to expose students to the process of quantifying behavior. GDF, FMF, and FAF files are provided.
These are the 85 mb video clips (cow1.mp4, cow2.mp4, deer1.mp4, deer2.mp4, hare1.mp4, hare2.mp4, horse1.mp4, horse2.mp4, marmot1.mp4, marmot2.mp4, squirrel1.mp4, squirrel2.mp4 ).
To save the file to the disk do this:
on a Mac: “Control” + “Click” on the link, and then select “Save Link Target as…”
on a PC: right click on the link, and then click “Save Link as…”
Here are the three JWatcher files: the global definition file, the focal master file, and the focal analysis master file. After downloading these files delete the .txt suffix. Be sure to put these files in a directory that you can easily navigate to while using JWatcher.
Comparing two recording techniques (15.2)
Here are the video clips: Ethogram_Comp.mov (311 mb), FlamingoA_Comp.mov (467 mb), FlamingoB_Comp.mov (467 mb), FlamingoC_Comp.mov (467 mb).
To save the file to the disk do this:
on a Mac: “Control” + “Click” on the link, and then select “Save Link Target as…”
on a PC: right click on the link, and then click “Save Link as…”
These are all uncompressed video files. You may wish to save these as lower-resolution files before running them with JWatcher on your computer.
Observing and quantifying behavioral sequences (15.3)
Developed by Barbara Clucas (UC Davis) with Janice C. Daniel and Daniel T. Blumstein (UCLA)
Here are 3 zipped file: (SSA_Squirrel_Videos(Part1).zip (118 mb)) (SSA_Squirrel_Videos(Part2).zip (365 mb)) (SSA_Squirrel_Videos(Part3).zip (406 mb)) containing all the video clips.
To save the file to the disk do this:
on a Mac: “Control” + “Click” on the link, and then select “Save Link Target as…”
on a PC: right click on the link, and then click “Save Link as…”
These are all compressed video files. You may have to experiment with different compression utilities to unzip it.
Here is the fmf associated with this lab called SSA.fmf. After downloading these files delete the .txt suffix.
Guppy courship: using both sequential analysis and basic analysis to conduct a pilot study (15.4)
Here are the videos associated with this worked example: FishCourtshipVideos.zip (256 mb)
